Call if You Can, Text if You Can't
Voice calls allow dispatchers to quickly gather important details, ask follow-up questions, and send help to the right place without delay. Even with modern technology, text messages can sometimes be delayed or fail to send, which is why a phone call should always be your first option whenever possible.
That said, we understand that sometimes calling isn’t an option. Text to 9-1-1 was designed for those moments when speaking could put someone in danger or isn’t possible, such as during a home invasion, an active shooter situation, or for members of the hearing or speech-impaired community. In those cases, being able to silently send a message to 9-1-1 can truly be lifesaving. If you ever need to use Text to 9-1-1, remember to include your location right away, briefly describe the emergency, and keep your messages short and clear. Text if you must — but call if you can. Both options connect you to the same dedicated team ready to help when you need it most.
To send a text to 9-1-1, follow these simple steps:
- Make sure you have a mobile device that can send and receive standard text (SMS) messages.
- In the “To” field, type 911.
- In the message field, type the location of the emergency first, followed by a short description of what’s happening.
- Press Send to deliver your message.
- You’ll receive a text response from a 9-1-1 Communications Specialist stating, “This is Marshall County 911 what is your emergency?”.
- The 911 Specialist will continue the conversation and ask any follow-up questions needed to get help on the way.
